We’d heard about the Tattooed Moose before we arrived in Charleston after seeing it on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives, and when our Airbnb hosts recommended it too, we knew we needed to go and try the famous duck club with a side of duck fat fries.
The Tattooed Moose is a real dive bar on the outskirts of downtown, offering up craft beer, live sport, a relaxed atmosphere and ginormous sandwiches. With Sharpie pens on each table, you can leave your mark whilst you wait for your food.
We ordered the Duck Club (a triple decker filled with duck confit, applewood smoked bacon, hickory smoked cheddar, topped with garlic aioli on sweet Hawaiian bread) and the smoked chicken salad BLT (topped with applewood smoked bacon and sweet and spicy green tomato pickles) with a side of duck fat fries and garlic aioli. Sandwiches are only $8ish, so it was very reasonable. Not being a big fan of duck, Phil was hesitant to order the club but wanted to see what all the fuss was about. The duck was juicy, fell apart and was complemented perfectly by the garlic aioli and the pickled cucumbers.
The Tattooed Moose is doing so well they’ve just opened another bar on suburban John’s Island.
We’d love to see a proper dive bar like this in Leeds!
